the boy who stood still

In the Bhagavata Purana there is a boy called Dhruva — the same dhṛ, to hold. He was five. He climbed toward his father's lap and was turned away by a stepmother's sharp word, and something in him refused to make the injury smaller than it was. His mother Suniti did not tell him it was nothing. She told him where steadiness is actually earned, and he walked into the forest and stood. Through rain, through the long months, he stood.

The story says Vishnu himself came, and gave the boy the one fixed place in the turning sky. Every other star wheels through the night. One holds still — Dhruva Tara, the pole star — and for a few thousand years, anyone lost has set their course by it.

That is the job description of a parent, more or less. Not the brightest light in the child's sky. The steady one.
