This Saturday, the 25th of July, is Devshayani Ekadashi. The story is one of the gentlest in the calendar — Vishnu, the sustainer of the universe, lies down on the great serpent Shesha in the ocean of milk and goes to sleep. For four months. He wakes in Kartik, in November, on Prabodhini Ekadashi, when the rains are long finished.

The tradition takes his sleep seriously. These four months — Chaturmas — are kept for tending rather than launching. Weddings pause. Big beginnings wait. What continues is the daily, inward kind of work — study, fasting for those who keep it, the household's quiet upkeep, the rain doing its slow feeding of the fields.
