the month named for the ear
श्रावण
This Thursday, in the northern reckoning, Shravan begins — the rain month, Shiva's month, the one the whole monsoon leans toward. Its name comes from the nakshatra Shravana, under which its full moon rises. And that name comes from the root śru — to hear. The holiest month of the rains is named, quite literally, for the ear.
The old teachers noticed something about the ear that is worth telling a grandparent, who will nod because they knew it already: it is the one sense without a lid. Eyes close, lips seal, hands withdraw. The ear stays open, even in sleep. And the tradition's most sacred learning is called śruti — that which is heard. Not read, not looked up. Heard, from a voice, by an ear that stayed open.
In a house with children, listening one sentence longer is a complete discipline in itself. The day's real report rarely arrives when summoned; it arrives sideways, while shoes are being removed, and it has a second paragraph that only comes out if the first one was received without a verdict.
The rain will be loud this month. It is a good month to be the quiet one in the room, and to let the small voices discover that the house has an ear with no lid on it.
