the weight test

Trust, in the body, is where you put weight without testing first. You do not inspect a chair before every sitting, or the banister before every stair. Placement without inspection — that is what trust feels like from inside.

Children run weight tests on parents all day, in miniature. A small embarrassing thing is told — a torn page, a lost pencil box, a stupid thing said to a friend — and your face is watched while it lands. Each small telling that is carried well is one beam load-tested and passed.

This matters because of what comes later. The big tellings — the ones at thirteen and beyond, the ones you most want to be trusted with — land on the beams built during the small ones. There is no other place for them to land.

Tonight there may be a small telling. Carry it plainly, without alarm and without a lecture. That is the beam.
